About the Press
Jerusalem and Athens Press is an independent publishing imprint founded by Lance Kennedy, a translator and lifelong student of the traditions the press exists to publish. He works from Greek, Arabic, and Latin, and writes at the intersection of philosophy, theology, and fiction.
His scholarship is expeditionary as much as textual. He has followed the sources to the places that made them, to Jerusalem and Rome, to the temples of Karnak and the old quarters of Cairo, and across Europe, America, and beyond to study alchemy, animistic religion, and other living traditions at their source. A tradition, on his account, is understood only where it is still practiced.
Between expeditions the work moves indoors. He reads in the archives that hold the primary record, the Harry Ransom Center in Austin, the special collections at Harvard, and private research libraries whose holdings seldom circulate. The books that carry this imprint begin in those rooms, with the documents in their original languages before a word is rendered into English.
An author of philosophy, theology, and fiction, he has spent years exploring a wide spectrum of belief systems, from evangelical Christianity and Islam to Freemasonry and Western esotericism, studying how each shapes the mind that holds it.
His engagement with Freemasonry is firsthand and senior. He serves as a District Deputy Grand Master and as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Masonic Jurisprudence of the Grand Lodge of Texas, and is a Charter Past Master of Centennial Lodge No. 500. He is a thirty-second-degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Knight Templar of the York Rite, holds membership in several Masonic invitational bodies, and has advanced training in the Western esoteric traditions.
The imprint carries his own books and the works he believes belong in print, whether newly written or long out of it.

Every title published under the Jerusalem and Athens Press imprint is held to a consistent standard: the text must be worth a fine binding. The press’s premium editions are bound in faux leather with gilt details, ribbon markers, and archival-quality paper, because the content demands care, and because the readers who seek out this kind of work deserve it.
